          The duo hovered, watching the last remnants of sand fall into the abyss the destroyed Roland had created. Then, radar readings began to go hazy once again, ghost images smattering the display in ever-shifting formations.

          “26, radar’s going haywire again. I don’t think it’s the walls this time.”

          Even 31’s radio contact had traces of interference, despite originating just meters away. 26 could feel a vibration, something different from the monotonous hum of a hovering helicopter.

          Suddenly, a shriek pierced the air, so loud it even overcame the pounding Apache blades. Instinct told 26 it was time to move.

          “Bug out, bug out,” he barked, tilting the cyclic both away from the hole and 31.

          Both pilots guided their crafts away from the hole in an abundance of caution, also increasing the distance between each other for increased maneuverability options.

          A huge burst of sand and rock shot upward from the hole, a large, dark shape amidst the debris. Quickly, the shape rose above the screen of desert detritus, massive scaly wings spreading wide...
